This successful community initiative has been cited as a model program, earning statewide recognition for its innovation and success. The coalition is closely affiliated with several local and state organizations that provide ongoing support and collaboration.
Since the founding of HHCC in 1999 by a handful of volunteers and interested citizens, Healthy Communities has grown to incorporate a full spectrum of programs and activities that make Henry County, Iowa, a better place to live, work, and raise a family. The citizen-based effort responds to both opportunities and needs as they develop in our communities, impacting people of all ages.
Healthy Communities is a non-profit organization staffed by a full time director. A variety of grant sources allow for paid staff in some program areas. A volunteer Board of Directors and a wide network of volunteers help coordinate the work of the organization. The Board, program staff, and volunteers include health care professionals, educators, business and industry representatives, advocates for youth, families, seniors, and residents from around the County.
"Every child, beginning at birth, will be healthy and successful."
Community Empowerment was founded on the premise that communities and state government can work together to improve the well being of our youngest children.
Community Empowerment Areas enable local citizens to lead collaborative efforts involving education, health, and human service programs on behalf of children, families and other citizens residing in the area. Empowerment funding is a combination of state and federal dollars, allocated to local areas who then make decisions on how funds will be used within their area or county.
